Year 6 Transition
Starting any new school can always be a worrying time for some families. At Newman we offer a full support package for all students. Every student is invited to an induction day where they can experience a full school day before they start. Students who may have particular concerns are also invited to an additional day at Newman in a smaller group so they are more prepared for transition. We also arrange individual tours and organise students to meet with key staff prior to starting at Newman on request.
Liaising with primary schools is vital and Newman Staff visit all feeder schools so we are able to understand each child’s individual needs. A literacy assessment is also carried out prior to starting Newman and is then combined with their SAT’s results so students can be placed in appropriate sets and begin to make excellent progress from the start.
Each child and their family are interviewed in June so we can learn a little more about them to enable us to place them in the correct form group. Parents are also invited to an induction session in March, a welcome session in June and a `How to Succeed at Newman’ evening in September. Supporting all students is vital to success but this must be a partnership between primary schools, parents/carers and Newman. If you have any concerns regarding your child starting secondary school then please contact Mrs A McAree, Senior Assistant Head for a friendly chat so we can alleviate any possible concerns.
