Key Stage 4

Our current year 11 students follow the Cambridge Nationals, Enterprise and Marketing Level 1/2 Certificate. This course focuses on the practical skills required to start a business venture as well as building theoretical knowledge and skills that can be transferred to other subjects.

There are three units of study, one of which is an exam based on enterprise and marketing concepts. Here students are able to learn about the decisions they would need to make should they start a business, allowing them to understand the differences between customers, and how a business will try to meet the individual needs and wants in order to make a profit.

The content will also prepare students for units two and three, which are both practical units that will be internally assessed and externally moderated. These involve the design of a business proposal to meet a user’s requirements. They will then learn how to develop a brand identify pitch their proposal with a specific target audience in mind. They will develop promotional material and present their pitch to an audience, followed by a review of their strengths and weaknesses.

The individual units are graded as Pass, Merit or Distinction, with the overall qualification being graded as Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction*.

Students are likely to be successful on the course if they have an interest in or good knowledge or links to a local business. A good understanding of ICT would also be an advantage. This qualification allows for progression for those wishing to continue their studies in Sixth Form.

The specification and examples of learner work are available on the course

Key Stage 5

Students in sixth form will follow the BTEC National Extended Certificate in Business. There will be 4 units to complete over two years which include:

Unit 1: Exploring Business. This will be internally assessed through coursework and studies different types of organisations including private companies and not for profit organisations.

Unit 2: Developing a Marketing Campaign. This will be externally assessed in controlled conditions, requiring the students to analyse and research a case study before producing a final report.

Unit 3: Personal and Business Finance. This will be externally assessed in the form of an exam.

Unit 8: The Recruitment and Selection Process which will be assessed internally through coursework and involves the students in a mock interview process, which is an excellent experience, allowing them to develop a personal development plan to help them reach their career goals.

The table shows below how BTEC grades equate to both A Level and UCAS points.
