Key Stage 4

Current Year 11

In Key Stage 4 students will study the AQA GCSE Business  specification. This qualification allows students to realise their full potential with engaging content. It is suitable for students of all levels of ability as long as they show a genuine interest in business. This course currently continues to be graded using A* – C for year 11 students, with our current year 10, following the new 9-1 specification which is outlined below:

GCSE Business  – what you will study:

  • Business in the real world
  • Influences on business
  • Business operations
  • Human resources
  • Marketing
  • Finance

There are two exam papers at the end of the course which form the overall assessment.

  • Paper 1; Influences of operations and HRM on business activity.
  • Paper 2: Influences of marketing and finance on business activity.

Each paper lasts for one hour and 45 minutes and is worth 50% of the GCSE result. Each paper comprises multiple choice sections as well as case studies with longer answer questions to answer.

Year 10

Our students will follow the Cambridge National in Enterprise and Marketing which is offered by the OCR exam board. This course includes both theoretical and practical topics, allowing students to apply their business knowledge in real situations.

All students will study three mandatory topics which are as follows:

  1. Enterprise and marketing concepts
  2. Design a business proposal
  3. Market and pitch a business proposal

The first topic provides a broad business background to underpin the course as a whole, where students will learn to understand what needs to happen, and what key factors will affect business when it is first starting up. This is assessed through an external examination which is a combination of multiple choice, shorter answer questions and those requiring a more detailed response.

In the second topic, the students will develop the skills needed in order to produce a business proposal. This will be designed to meet a specific challenge as provided by the exam board.

The knowledge and skills learned in the first two units will assist students in the completion of the third where they will learn how to develop a brand identify and create their pitch with a specific target audience in mind. They will develop promotional material and present their pitch to an audience. This will be followed by a review of their strengths and weaknesses.

The individual units are graded as Pass, Merit or Distinction, with the overall qualification being graded as Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction*.

Students are likely to be successful on the course if they have an interest in or good knowledge or links to a local business.  A good understanding of ICT would also be an advantage. This qualification allows for progression for those wishing to continue their studies in Sixth Form.
