Year 9 First World War Poetry

Year 9 students have completed a short unit of work on First World War Poetry this half term. They have read a variety of poems and explored them through writing and discussion. In addition to this a number of students have written their own poems inspired by such writers as Wilfred Owen. Connor Mattson wrote an especially powerful poem and it is published here - Mrs H Delbourgo, English Department.

WAR

There I was in the battlefield choking, drowning, guttering in smoke from the guns and gasping for breath.

Turning to survive on the bleeding field with my friend waiting for it to end.

They spat at us with bullets and they coughed shrapnel.

We chorused when they sang aloft; we whistled while they swiped us with their scythe.

Oh, death was the enemy of ours! We laughed at them; we leagued with them our old chums.
