Careers Provision

“The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and keep it.”                                     Genesis 2:15

Newman Catholic School aims to be at the forefront of careers education. We offer a robust curriculum that gives students in all key stages up-to-date, regular, meaningful exposure to the world of work. Whether that exposure be through employer and university visits, external and internal speakers and workshops, or through one-to-one mentoring with companies such as Inspira and our own careers staff, we know that regular engagement with employers and careers information is integral to future success.  We have high aspirations for all of our students; we make it our priority to ensure they have high aspirations in themselves. Having strong links with Hello Future, Inspira and the Enterprise Advisor Network allows us to utilise expert advice, high quality resources and give our students even more of an impartial experience so that they can select the correct pathways for a successful future.

Destinations

As a school, we are proud of our students’ next steps.

In 2018:

  • 89% of A-level students moved onto university, an apprenticeship or employment.
  • 83% went to their first choice university.
  • 67% went to university.
  • 92% of our GCSE students continued in either Sixth Form or Further Education, whilst the other 8% accessed an apprenticeship.

Matching Students To Destinations

We survey our students from years 7 – 13 yearly in order to ascertain their desired career destinations. Where students know what they want, we seek to ensure they are well informed about all aspects of their chosen destination. We use this data (Along with Labour Market September 2018 information) to group students into different pathways in order to deliver a more individualised, bespoke programme of events for each individual. Where students are less certain about their futures, we look to involve them in a more rounded range of activities, and give them exposure to a greater range of employers and advisors, so that they are guided to choose a destination that suits them.

Careers Week

We have a strong careers programme at Newman which can be accessed below. At the end of every half term, Careers Week bursts into life and our curriculum becomes infused with careers information in every subject, at every key stage. Each lesson that week starts with information about a career that is linked to the subject. Curriculum experts in every taught discipline allow students to see the relevance of their learning and the careers opportunities that it could expose them to. We timetable a host of alternative assemblies, and look to engage in entrepreneurial and employer based activities for all year groups.
