St John Henry Newman Catholic School is situated on the edge of the Great Border City of Carlisle, on an elevated site with open views over the countryside and city. Located within a short drive from the Lake District National Park and easy access to M6 motorway providing links to both South West Scottish Borders and beautiful Cumbria. Our brand new school offers a modern, airy environment with excellent facilities. Ofsted recently judged the school as “good” in all areas with the Science Department in particular a strength of the school. We are seeking to appoint a creative, forward thinking and dynamic Head of Department on a permanent , full time basis.

Our Science department comprises of specialist teachers in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. We deliver the National Curriculum using Activate resources to KS3, then we move on to AQA Trilogy supported by AQA Triple Award. As we have specialists in all fields we are able to deliver A Level Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Applied Science. As a department we are lucky to be supported by two excellent technicians who support us with our practical work, they are always on hand to try new practicals and enjoy coming up with new ways to carry out practicals. In our new school building we are all located on the same floor, with six large science labs and an enviably large prep room, all with views across the playing fields and farm fields.

Teacher to join our Design & Technology/Art Faculty

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a creative, motivated and enthusiastic Teacher who will join our thriving Technology and Art Faculty. The department has staff with multi skills and the exact teaching content will be built around the successful candidate.

The faculty has new purpose built facilities which provide an environment in which creativity, innovation and problem solving skills can flourish.

Design and Technology and Art are taught to all pupils across our school in KS3 and we presently teach BTEC Construction, Level 1-2 Hospitality & Catering, GCSE Design & Technology as well as A' level Product Design, Food Science and Nutrition and Art.

We are interested in talking to both experienced teachers looking for a new challenge as well as newly qualified teachers at the beginning of their career.

Head of Year

Full time (37 hours per week), term time only (39 weeks per year) on a permanent basis

£25,560 per annum pro rata (FTE £29,777) Rising to £26,006 per annum pro rata (FTE £30,296) after a successful 6 month probation period

This is a non-teaching post, you will join our pastoral team. Initially you will be working with primary schools to get to know the incoming Year 7 for September: You will be Head of Year for this cohort from September 2024.

You will support school improvement by working as part of a vital team to contribute to an effective pastoral and learning mentor system by providing support to teachers, pupils and families whilst also assisting with daily break and lunch supervision of pupils.

Exam Invigilator


CE2: £12.00 per hour

We are looking to recruit additional Exam Invigilators to ensure the fair and proper conduct of examinations in our school.

Lesson Cover Supervisor

PCD5: £11.39 per hour

We are seeking to establish a team of lesson cover supervisors able to cover the short-term planned or unplanned absence of teaching staff. You will take sole charge of a group of pupils and manage their behaviour, whilst ensuring a constructive working environment.

No active teaching is required as pupils will learn by carrying out pre-prepared work under supervision.

The primary focus will be to maintain good order and to keep pupils on task with the work that has been set.

The successful candidate(s) will be willing to cover a variety of timetabled lessons, sometimes at short notice.

Full training will be provided.
